ERRAGAL - REALMS OF THE UNDERWORLD

Non si può dire che di strada dal primo demo Lord Erragal, uno dei pionieri che, dal 2009, portano il Black Metal tra le strade di Baghdad, non ne abbia fatta: "Realms of The Underworld" subito si propone, dal flauto che apre i battenti dell’album, come un’ardita promessa di un lavoro che rivoluzionerà il 2013, nel suo sfociare di atmosfere funerarie e grunt profondissimi. Pizzico per pizzico andiamo a riscoprire gli antichi rituali mesopotamici, prima nella musica e poi nei testi, evocativi di immagini d’immenso che si manifestano nella nostra mente; un vero e proprio viaggio nelle profondità dell’assoluto, ma se per tutta la durata dell’intro e dei primi pezzi realizziamo che le premesse per l’album che lancerà il progetto Erragal ci sono, ad un ascolto più approfondito l’opera, privata degli innumerevoli filtri che la appesantiscono, appare blanda e monotona, come una bella ragazza che, privata del trucco, si rivela essere un clone della Maionchi. In questo tripudio di riff tipicamente Black, orecchiabile, seppur monotono in molte sue parti, laddove Goatmoon o Satanic Warmaster avrebbero messo a dura prova le nostre orecchie con i loro scream laceranti, Erragal gioca nascosto, in difesa, riducendo la propria voce alla stregua di un qualsiasi altro strumento, coperta da canti lontani e tamburi che emergono di tanto in tanto. Manca totalmente una presa di posizione, la fermezza e certezza che l’artista esprime nel voler comporre un album così rivoluzionario mancano però nell’aspetto più tecnico della sua composizione; ed ecco che è stato fatto il cosiddetto passo più lungo della gamba, che dà come risultato un album piuttosto stucchevole e ripetitivo. Ciononostante, il mixaggio ottimo e la ricercatezza degli arrangiamenti rendono "Realms of the Underworld" non solo un’esperienza mistica interessante, ma persino un disco piacevole da ascoltare. Ma se un giorno vedremo Erragal in cima alle classifiche, non sarà certo stato questo l’album a segnare la sua svolta.

One can not say that, from the first demo, Lord Erragal (one of the pioneers who has been bringing Black Metal through the streets of Baghdad since 2009) hasn’t come a long way: "Realms of The Underworld", as a result of the deepest grunts and funeral atmospheres, shows, right away from the flute which opens on the composition, to be a bold promise of a piece of work which will revolutionize year 2013. Little by little we will rediscover the ancient Mesopotamian rituals, at first listening to the music itself and then also reading the lyrics, which evoke images that appear in our mind: a real journey through the deeps of the absolute. While listening to the intro and the first tracks, we realize that there are the basis for the album that will launch the project Erragal, yet, listening to this production in a deeper way, it seems to be, without all of those filters which load it, bland and monotonous, just like a beautiful girl who, without her makeup, looks like a double of Margaret Thatcher.  In this blaze of typically Black Metal riffs, catchy, though monotonous in many of its parts, where Goatmoon or Satanic Warmaster would have made our ears bleed using their lacerating screams, Erragal hides, plays defense, downgrading his voice to act like any other instrument while being covered by distant singing and drums that emerge every now and then. A stance is totally absent, the firmness and the certainty that the artist expresses in his wish to compose such a revolutionary album are lacking regarding to the compositional technique: Erragal bit more than he could chew and as a result of this we listen to a tedious and repetitive album. However, not only do the excellent mixing and the refinement of the arrangements make "Realms of the Underworld" an interesting mystic experience, but also an enjoyable album to listen to. But if one day we will see Erragal climbing up the charts, his turning out will not have been marked by this piece of work at all.
